Everything that you need to know about Ingrown Hairs

We know that it probably isn’t something that you want to talk about, but ingrown hairs are more than just an itchy, uncomfortable, pain in the neck when it comes to that post shave, fuzz free, feeling.
In fact, ingrown hairs are something that pretty much everyone has to deal with at some point in their lives. The good news is, no matter how irritating ingrown hairs may seem at the time, there is something that you can do to help, also to prevent them and to make sure that they stay away too.
To help answer all these questions that you may have about ingrown hairs, I have put together the Care By Jords guide to ingrown hairs.
What are ingrown hairs?
When you shave, pluck or wax hair in order to remove it from your body, the horrible truth is that before long, the hair will grow back through the follicle and your skin. In the most part this will happen with no drama (although it does mean that you will need to tackle the hairs using your favourite method at some point in the future) but there are times when the hair growing back can cause a problem or two.
These are called ingrown hairs. They will appear to be raised, red and itchy spots that are found in areas where you have removed hair. You may even see your hair trapped under the skin. They can be quite painful, depending on the location and, over time, you may even see pus in the spots.
What causes them?
In the most part, the main cause for ingrown hairs is because you have removed the hair from certain areas of your body. The most common places that you will see ingrown hairs will be:
- Your face and your neck
- Your legs
- Your chest
- Your armpits
- Your back
- Your pubic areas
Of course, the areas that you see ingrown hairs will largely depend on whether you are a man or a woman and where you choose to remove your hair.
You are more likely to develop ingrown hairs if you are someone who has coarse, thick hair or the hair that you have in that area is curly.
How can you prevent them?
The best way to prevent ingrown hairs from forming is to stop removing the hairs in the first place, although, let’s be honest, that isn’t likely to happen. If you do want to remove the hairs from these places, then there are a few steps that you can follow to try and prevent them.
- Shave on wet skin, using a good quality shaving gel, cream or lotion
- Keep skin supple by moisturising immediately after shaving
- Always shave in the direction that your hairs grow
- Use as few strokes of the razor as possible, trying not to go over the same spot
- Rinse your razor regularly
- Hold a cool, wet cloth on your skin after shaving
- Release trapped hairs using an exfoliating scrub
- Never use a blunt razor
If you follow these steps, then you should find that your chances of developing ingrown hairs is lower. That you can have soft, supple and smooth skin, all without the worry of ingrown hairs at the back of your mind.
